One of the best things about pursuing a degree at Owens Community College is the emphasis on hands-on learning. Owens doesn’t just prepare students with classroom knowledge it gives us the chance to step out into the real world and apply what we’ve learned. One of the most valuable ways Owens does this is through Internships. These opportunities give students the chance to experience their field firsthand, develop professional skills, and build connections that can shape their future careers.
I had the privilege of completing my internship with Party in the Parks, and it turned out to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my college journey. Internships often get described as “steppingstones,” but for me, this was so much more. It was a chance to dive right in, take responsibility, and learn what it’s really like to manage events on a professional level.
Learning by Doing
During my internship, I was given the responsibility of managing the events we hosted throughout the summer. This meant organizing logistics, working directly with performers, and ensuring that everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. One of my main roles was coordinating with the bands and food trucks that made each event exiting and unique. I quickly learned that communication, planning, and flexibility are all essential when you’re dealing with multiple moving parts.
It wasn’t just about assigning tasks or checking schedules, I had to be adaptable and step in wherever I was needed. Whether it was making sure the band had everything they needed to set up, checking that the food trucks were in the right place, or handling unexpected challenges, I learned how to think on my feet and stay calm under pressure. These are lessons that no textbook could fully teach, and I’m grateful I had the chance to develop them in a real- world environment.
Taking on new challenges
One of the most exciting parts of my internship was getting the chance to go on the radio with Fred Lefevre. This was an amazing opportunity to step out of my comfort zone and represent both Owens and Party in the Parks. On air, I got to talk about my experience as a student, the skills I was gaining and the band that was playing that night at our event. It was a proud moment for me, not only because I was able to share my story, but also because it showed how many doors an internship can open. Public speaking and media appearances weren’t something I expected to do during my internship, but that’s what made it such a valuable experience. Owens emphasizes growth through opportunity, and this was a perfect example of how trying something new can lead to personal and professional development.

Why Internships Matter:
Internships are more than just a requirement or a line on a resume; they are an opportunity to discover your strengths, build confidence, and connect your education to real- word scenarios. For me, this experience confirmed that I enjoy working in fast- paced environments where I can collaborate with others, solve problems and create meaningful experiences for the community. The knowledge I gained at Owens gave me the foundation needed, but my internship gave me the confidence to apply it. I now feel better prepared for my Career because I have had the chance to experience it firsthand and practice what I have been taught.

Looking ahead
As I reflect on my time at Owens Community College and my internship with Party in the Parks, I can’t help but feel excited about the future. This experience gave me hands on knowledge, leadership opportunities, and even media exposure, things I never imagined I’d get to do as student. It showed me that Owens truly invested in its students by connecting us with real world opportunities that make a difference.
For anyone considering Owens, know that so many great opportunities lie ahead. Whether it’s in event management, healthcare, business, or any other fields, internships like the one I completed are a chance to grow, learn and set yourself up for success. Owens gave me the opportunity, but it was up to me to make the most of it and I am so glad I did.
